Resolution in Support of the Hampton University Proton Cancer Treatment Center.

 

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, cancer is the most common cause of death in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, one out of every three Virginians will develop some form of cancer during his or her lifetime; and

 

WHEREAS, Hampton University has broken ground on the 98,000 square feet proton radiotherapy center which will house some of the most advanced cancer fighting technology in the world; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) will be a Virginia showplace and genuine national resource as the sixth and largest proton beam treatment facility in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute will keep Virginia at the forefront of healthcare and provide Virginians with the best cancer treatment option-one which is not currently available in either Virginia or the mid Atlantic region; and

 

WHEREAS, the HUPTI will be a catalyst for biomedical technology development and scientific research; and

 

WHEREAS, a proposal has been submitted to the Commonwealth to assist the university with some of the project costs in the crucially important intervening three years from now until the first treatment and revenue begins; and

 

WHEREAS, when fully operational in 2010 the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute will directly generate over 150 new highly skilled jobs for Hampton Roads, provide a major cancer research facility, provide access to cancer diagnostic and treatment services vitally needed throughout Virginia.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Hampton supports the efforts of Hampton University and the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute, LLC to establish the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute;

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Hampton strongly urges the Governor and all members of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia to support full funding of the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institutes financial request for support.

 

Adopted at the regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia held on December 19, 2007.
