Proclamation Proclaiming Support for Housing America 2007 Campaign

 

HOUSING AMERICA 2007 CAMPAIGN

 

WHEREAS, for more than 70 years, it has been the policy of this nation, under the U.S. Housing Act, to promote the general welfare of the nation by employing its funds and credit to assist the several states and their political subdivisions to remedy the unsafe and unsanitary housing conditions and the acute shortage of decent, safe and sanitary dwellings for families of lower income; and

 

WHEREAS, according to the State of the Nations Housing report, 15.6 million households now pay more than half of their income for housing; and

 

WHEREAS, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials is committed to re-establish this objective as a national priority; and

 

WHEREAS, providing safe, decent and affordable housing is pivotal in our society, and beyond providing basic shelter, it positively impacts the economy and improves the quality of our environment; and

 

WHEREAS, the public and private sectors have learned much about the cost-effective provision of affordable housing; however, unmet housing needs in our communities persist; and

 

WHEREAS, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; Housing Assistance Council; Local Initiatives Support Corporation; Mortgage Bankers Association; National Association of Counties; National Association of Home Builders; National Association of Realtors; National Council of State Housing Agencies; National Housing Conference; National League of Cities, National Low-Income Housing Coalition; and U.S. Conference of Mayors are united in an effort to raise public awareness of the importance of affordable housing and community development programs and resources; and

 

WHEREAS, during the period March 25 - April 9, 2007, the aforementioned groups will launch Housing America 2007, a national campaign to educate and inform the public and decision makers of the need to address the nations housing and community development concerns;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ross A. Kearney, II, Mayor, on behalf of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia acknowledge that over a period of many years, we have endeavored to address affordable housing and community development needs and have been successful in doing so using a combination of local, state and federal resources, and I hereby endorse the

 

HOUSING AMERICA 2007 CAMPAIGN

 

and ask all citizens to join in the national effort to raise awareness of the importance of affordable housing and community development in our City.
