Resolution authorizing the appropriation of $450,000 from the General Fund undesignated fund balance to the Hampton Arts Foundation Capital Fund for the purchase of the Mugler Building property adjacent to the American Theatre.

 

WHEREAS, the Mugler building adjacent to the American Theatre came available for purchase in late 2005; and

WHEREAS, the aforementioned property represents a unique opportunity for the expansion of the American Theatre; and

WHEREAS, the board of directors of the Hampton Arts Foundation has voted unanimously to pursue an expansion project with an anticipated cost of approximately two million dollars ($2,000,000.00); and

WHEREAS, the proposed use of the building will allow for expanded space to be used for the lobby, theatre, studio and lecture space and will additionally allow widening of the stage; and

WHEREAS, the lot will accommodate an estimated 30-40 parking spaces and compliments an adjoining lot on County Street which was purchased by the City in 2000; and

WHEREAS, the Hampton City Council supports the proposed enhancements to the American Theatre.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HAMPTON, VIRGINIA:

 

1. That it appropriates $450,000 from the General Fund undesignated fund balance to the Hampton Arts Foundation for contribution toward the Foundations capital campaign.

 

2. This resolution shall take effect immediately.

 

Adopted at the regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia held on March 22, 2006.
