Resolution in Recognition of Reverend Anderson W. Clary, Jr.


WHEREAS, Anderson W. Clary, Jr. was born on January 7, 1947 in Newport News, Virginia, where he attended the public schools and graduated from Huntington High School in 1965; and


WHEREAS, Anderson W. Clary, Jr. attended Providence College in Rhode Island from 1965 to 1969, and after his graduation, he became the first black teacher in the Pawtucket Island School System, teaching high school until 1973; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary was a Professor of Field Ministry at the Harvard Divinity School from 1982 until 1984; and


WHEREAS, in 1984, Reverend Anderson W. Clary, Jr. received his Master's Degree in Bible Studies from Providence College; and


WHEREAS, in 1988, Reverend Clary founded Beacon at the Crossroads, a faith-based organization which provided volunteer services in the areas of housing, education, employment, computer literacy, food programs, grassroots economic development and homeland security; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Anderson W. Clary, Jr, was installed at the tenth pastor of Queen Street Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia, on June 9, 1991; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary was appointed a Neighborhood Commissioner for Hampton's 8th District; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary was a Professor of Theology at the Richmond Virginia Seminary from 1995 until 2000; and


WHEREAS, he filled a position as Professor of Religious Studies at Hampton University until 2002; and


WHEREAS, on May 4, 2004, Reverend Clary was elected to serve on the Hampton City School Board, and during his time on the School Board, he was instrumental in assisting in the plans for the development of two new schools which are scheduled to open in fall of 2009; and


WHEREAS, he was also instrumental in developing and opening the Bridgeport Academy, an alternative education program; and


WHEREAS, in 2005, Reverend Clary served on the City of Hampton's Hurricane Katrina Relief Committee; and


WHEREAS, Governor Timothy J. Kaine appointed Reverend Clary to his Commission on Community and National Service, an advisory board established by Governor Kaine in June 2006, and Reverend Clary served as Chairman of the board; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary became involved in the Community Priorities Workshop, which helped to engage the entire Hampton community in setting goals and direction for the Hampton City School Division; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary was appointed to fill an un-expired term on the Hampton City Council, resigned from the School Board and was sworn in as a Councilman on October 1, 2007; and


WHEREAS, during his term on the Hampton City Council, he served on the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Authority, the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads and the Office of Human Affairs, and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary's civic engagement and spirit of volunteerism carried over into other organizations, including the Motion Project in Newport News and the Amachi mentoring program; and


WHEREAS, Reverend Clary is married to the former Leann Britto of Providence, Rhode Island, and from that union, they have two children, Robert Lee and Andrea Elaine; and


NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that Reverend Anderson W. Clary, Jr., be and hereby is, recognized and commended for his services to the City Council and the citizens of the City of Hampton; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the June 18, 2008, City Council meeting of the City of Hampton, Virginia, and that an appropriate copy be signed by the Mayor, attested by the Clerk and presented to the Reverend Anderson W. Clary, Jr.
