Resolution In Memory of James S. Burgett

 

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett was born in Clovis, New Mexico in 1942 and graduated from New Mexico State University; and

 

WHEREAS, after a distinguished twenty-one year career as an officer in the United States Air Force, James S. Burgett retired in 1984; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett served in Vietnam and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base at the end of his military career, retiring as an intelligence officer; and

 

WHEREAS, remaining on the Peninsula after his retirement, James S. Burgett pursued a career as a commercial real estate broker and was active in his own business; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett lived on the Peninsula for twenty-nine years and served on numerous committees, had membership in various organizations and was an active member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church in York County; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2000, James S. Burgett, a Republican, was elected to the York County Board of Supervisors, representing District 4; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett was a founding member of Caritas and the York County Business Association which became the Chamber of Commerce; and

 

WHEREAS, his tenure on the Board was marked by his support for the renovation of Yorktowns waterfront, with the construction of the Riverwalk Landing, and the revitalization of Route 17, improving the appearance of the buildings and grounds by offering monetary incentives to the businesses along the corridor; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett was an eight-year member of the Board of Supervisors, and, during his tenure, he served as Chairman for three years and Vice-Chairman for two years; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dana, two sons, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren; and

 

WHEREAS, a devoted husband and father and a man of great Christian faith, he wrote poetry, sang songs daily to Dana, played the guitar for her and close friends and loved playing golf, shooting an eagle on the 12th hole at Kiln Creek on September 11th, two weeks before his death; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett served on the Countys Youth Commission and encouraged the young members to be involved in the community; and

 

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett believed that the County must put customer service first and should provide high quality services for the citizens of York County;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that James S. Burgett be, and hereby is, recognized and commended for his dedication to the citizens of York County, the Peninsula and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the October 24, 2007 minutes of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, and that an appropriate copy be signed by the Mayor and attested by the Clerk, and presented to the family of James S. Burgett.

 

Adopted at the regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia held on October 24, 2007.
