In Recognition of Claude F. Burge, Sr.

 

 

 

WHEREAS, Hampton Volunteer Fire Company No.1 was organized in 1884; William G. Johnstone, a native of New York State, was one of the founding members; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1896, Benjamin F. Burge, who was born in what is now the City of Hampton, married William G. Johnstones daughter, joined the Fire Company and later became Assistant Chief of the Fire Company; and

 

WHEREAS, from that union, Claude F. Burge, Sr. was born in 1905; and

 

WHEREAS, Claude F. Burge, Sr. joined the Fire Company at the age of 16, and on April 3, 1922, he was appointed a lamp boy with the Hampton Fire Company by Foreman C. H. Hewins; and

 

WHEREAS, at that time it was necessary to be elected to the job in order to become a City employee of the Fire Company and to keep the job, the employee had to be re-elected each year; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1929, Claude F. Burge, Sr. was elected Assistant Engineer (now driver/pump operator) and became First Assistant Chief on April 3, 1944; and

 

WHEREAS, Claude F. Burge, Sr. was married in 1931 and had two sons born in 1932 and 1934; and

 

WHEREAS, in the 1930s the engine house staff consisted of a chief engineer and two engineers who lived on the second floor of the building; and

 

WHEREAS, all of the staff had been single until Claude F. Burge, Sr. became one of the three firefighters who were employed to staff the Engine House on Court Street; and

 

WHEREAS, there was a rule requiring all employees to live in the engine house; and

 

WHEREAS, each man had a bedroom and shared a large dining room and a kitchen, so Claude F. Burge, Sr. family moved into his bedroom; and

 

WHEREAS, although the rule had not changed, Claude F. Burge, Sr. received special permission, after his second child was born, to move out - if he could find a house within one block of the engine house; and

 

WHEREAS, Claude F. Burge, Sr. became Assistant Fire Chief at Langley Air Force Base in 1941 and served until his death in 1965; and

 

WHEREAS, both of his sons, Claude F. Burge, Jr. and Donald S. Burge joined the Fire Company; and

 

WHEREAS, Claude F. Burge, Jr. joined the Fire Company in 1948, served twelve years as Company President, and continues to serve in the Fire Company today; and

 

WHEREAS, Donald S. Burge joined the Fire Company in 1950 and served until his death in 1999; and

 

WHEREAS, having completed his shift as Assistant Chief of the Langley AFB Fire Department at 8:00 a.m. in the morning, Claude F. Burge, Sr. died unexpectedly on March 13, 1965, while fighting a trailer fire at the Peninsula Engineering Company, located at 1922 West Pembroke Avenue in Hampton, Virginia; and

 

WHEREAS, members of the Burge family have been fighting fires in Hampton for 123 years, and the tradition was continued when, in 1983, Mark D. Burge, son of Claude F. Burge, Jr., joined the Fire Company, the fourth generation of the family to serve; and

 

WHEREAS, Mark D. Burge is currently Deputy Chief;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that Claude F. Burge, Sr. be, and hereby is, recognized and commended for his commitment and service to the citizens of the City of Hampton; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the September 26, 2007 minutes of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, and that an appropriate copy be signed by the Mayor and attested by the Clerk, and presented to the family of Claude F. Burge, Sr.

Adopted at the regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia held on September 26, 2007.
