Proclamation in recognition of the 2005-2006 Hampton University Pirates Football Team.

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton University Pirates Football Team, ranked #2 in the nation after the regular season, completed the 2005 season hosting the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs at Hampton Universitys Armstrong Stadium; and

 

WHEREAS, the Pirates completed an undefeated regular season at 11-0; and

 

WHEREAS, the 2005 Pirates were a defensive powerhouse, ranked #1 in the nation in touchdown passes allowed at fifty-five hundredths per game, #2 in the nation in scoring defense at fourteen points per game, #2 in the nation in pass defense efficiency at forty-five percent, and #3 in the nation in pass defense at one hundred thirty-six yards per game; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton University Pirates Football Team claimed 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship Title with an undefeated record of 8-0; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton University Pirates Football Team, under the adept leadership of Head Coach Joseph Taylor, who was named Coach-of-the-Year for the following organizations: Schutt, in conjunction with American Football Monthly Magazine, MEAC, Pigskin Club of the District of Columbia, Touchdown Club of Atlanta, Georgia, Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN), and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division I-AA, and his assistant coaches are to be commended; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton University Pirates Football Team has demonstrated great skill, performance, character, and sportsmanship in the game of football with several players earning MEAC Player-of- the-Year accolades Justin Durant, repeat Defensive Player-of-the-Year, Alonzo Coleman, Offensive Player-of-the-Year, and Gerell Golightly, Offensive Lineman-of-the-Year; and

 

WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia to congratulate the 2005 Hampton University Pirates Football Team for bringing honor and distinction not only to Hampton University but also to the City of Hampton;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ross A. Kearney, II, Mayor, on behalf of the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, do hereby congratulate the 2005 Hampton University Pirates Football Team and its coaches.
