commissioners of the CUC "Reactive component" - members of the AHLG Volunteer citizen input and participation through both groups Highly-trained professional staff Trained volunteer facilitators Network of community resources (access to specialist through internet and local contacts) Resource library (videos, books and periodicals) Community support and engagement Interesting Facts: The CUC is seen as a regional and national resource on community and workplace diversity (profiled in the National League of Cities' Examples of Programs for Cities, also profiled in Nation's Cities Weekly and the newsletter of the Study Circles Resource Center and other publications) The CUC has received four national awards from the National League of Cities March 7,1999 - City Cultural Diversity Award - first place in population category for "public forums, study circles and multicultural storytelling" December 9, 2000 - 2000 Innovation Award - Hampton was one of five winners for it's "Undoing Racism in Hampton" program March 10, 2003 - City Cultural Diversity Award - first place in population category for "creation of the Ad Hoc Leadership Group" - based upon the AHLG's activation in 2001-2002 March 13, 2005 - City Cultural Diversity Award - first place in population category for "The Hampton Diversity College" program The Hampton Diversity College program has graduated a total of 175 graduates since its creation in 2004 The Hampton Diversity College V will begin sessions on April 4, 2006 The Hampton Diversity Leadership Academy I will begin sessions on February 6, 2006 - this is the second level to Hampton Diversity College program The CUC's "Opening the Book on Diversity" book discussion group has been successfully directed by volunteers for over six years Youth engagement is a critical component of the work of the CUC - we have youth serving as full participating commissioners of the CUC Youth Diversity Facilitation Team - trained high schools student volunteers "Heart & Soul Committee" - collaborative body composed of members of the CUC and the Hampton Neighborhood Commission Hampton Employee Council Diversity Educations Sessions - CUC staff has provided substantial support for the development of these sessions Hampton Police Division - Post Academy Diversity Sessions - all newly trained Hampton police officers are now receiving diversity education from CUC staff The CUC commissioners, AHLG members and staff come together 2-3 times a year for our "Chit, Chat & Chew" during which time we coordinate, and discuss timely topics with our invited guests: Police Chief, Mayor, Superintendent, etc. Hampton City Schools -
