  Mayor Ward called the meeting to order. She indicated that Councilwoman Leary was not present as she was recovering from surgery earlier this week.

1.11-0301Recognition of Hampton University Athletics
ACTION: Presented by Brian Marchese. The following representatives of Hampton University were present:

Women's Basketball: Athletes Jericka Jenkins and Choicetta McMillian and Coach David Six
Men's Basketball: Athlete Chris Tolson and Coach Edward Joyner, Jr.
Women's Cross Country: Athlete Devyn Thompson and Coach Maurice Pierce
Women's Indoor Track and Field: Athlete Breana Norman and Coach Maurice Pierce
Sailing Team: Athlete Joshua Gopeesingh and Coach Alessandro Ambrosi
Golf: Athlete Kayla Williams and Coach Reggie Mitchell

The tennis coach, Dr. Robert Screen, was also recognized for his induction into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2011. Coach Maurice Pierce was also named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) coach of the year in both cross country and indoor track and field. Coach David Six was honored as Coach of the Year in his second season as Women's Basketball Coach and he was also named as Outstanding Coach at the MEAC tournament in Winston-Salem along with Men's Head Coach, Edward Joyner.

Athletic Director, Keshia Campbell, thanked Council for the recognition and support and introduced other individuals important to the athletics program:

ACTION: Presented by Vice Mayor George Wallace.
Public Comment
  Eddie Deerfield spoke about the cancelation of the afternoon work session and inquired as to the status of the due diligence on Harbor Square and wanted to know the costs of repair/replacement He also said Council should be talking about acquisitions being considered, the legislative package, when the City is next going to the bond market and making improvements to schools.

Edwin Boone stated that he is going to discourage his family from returning to live in Hampton as they will have to pay the bills which are being incurred now.

Joan Charles referenced Hampton's agricultural roots and indicated she was going to be a turnip and encouraged Hampton's citizens to turn-up to register to vote, to turn-up at the polls to vote, and to turn-up to pass out campaign literature. She also questioned why the Parade of Homes, a private entity, is being publicized on the city's website.
